When a probationary police officer is shot point-blank through the forehead at home, forensic engineer Dr. Anja Toussaint determines the ensuing house fire resulted from arson – always a convenient way to destroy clues.

The victim’s sister claims the murderer is another police officer but refuses to trust the authorities with any information. Reluctantly, Dr. Toussaint agrees to dig around the edges of the case and see what she can find out about the rogue cop.

Anja soon discovers that the probationary police officer was being relentlessly blackmailed, but had set into motion a desperate plan to turn the tables on the blackmailer.
This short story is approximately 7000 words long.
